Jacqueline Barton

At the heart of my work is a belief that children hold onto something adults too often lose: the ability to imagine without restraint, to play without purpose, to create without fear. Adults often want to be as carefree as children but cannot because they know too much about the hardships of the world. Due to this I return to a sense of wonder in my practice, seeking to capture both the innocence and the complexity of that way of being. I work primarily in ceramics and jewelry, mediums that are both fragile yet are capable of outlasting generations. My art invokes a whimsical, playful, feeling, like you are once again a carefree child looking for buried treasure on the beach.

The rugged beauty of coastal life in Long Island, Maine, its shifting tides, weathered shorelines, and resilient community are also a constant source of inspiration. It is truly a unique place of love and friendship where even strangers always exchange a wave. Through my work, I invite others to experience that same childlike wonder: to see the world with curiosity, to rediscover joy in the everyday, and to feel the magic around us as a child would.
